Rating: - kollectors addition package is Horrible
Go with the standard edition. The kollectors edition has a flimsy, flimsy outside box with a plastic sleave to hold it together. Inside you’ll find the tiny, cheaply printed stupid comic brochure, a print of the cover art in a silly sealed plastic cover (ohhh, fancy like my grandma’s china cabinet, ooohhh, very pretty and very expensive; NOT! Stupid and waste of money), the normal sized game manual, and a (now this is where I get fuming mad) small cardbord flipper sleave the holds the two disks. For crying out load, I Paid a premium for this package, I want at least a solid as standard edition game holder. This is pathetic and if I lived in California or some other new age state I’d probably start a class action lawsuit against the company for ripping me off.
Rating: - Wasn’t on my radar but glad it landed in my lap.
I originally had no interest in this title. I am am avid FPS buff who hadn’t played an enjoyable fighting game since Dead or Alive 2 on the original Xbox. So when this title popped on Amazon’s Lightning deals I was a little underwhelmed. How ever I had recently watched a review for the game over at […]. The game seemed to do a good job of merging two unique universes together. Knowing my girlfriend was a Mortal Kombat fan and I wanting to see the how the joker character played out, I ordered it as a good Thanksgiving game to play with friends.
First Impressions
This Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe Collector’s Edition game is fun. It’s not hard but it isn’t impossible. The story line has you jumping from character to character so that your not forced to be one person through out the entire campaign. You gte a scope of how these two worlds merge and whhat good guys and bad guys would do. It’s realy easy to pick up and play and realize 2 hours have passed. All the iconic characters have graphic novel feel. It’s a nice change rather then seeing The Dark Knight version of the Joker. Though the women all seem to be missing clothing around there boobs somewhere. It was a little to much for my taste.
Violence
Violence is turned down in this game but isn’t gone. Think of it as a PG-13 film or even a Dead or Alive game. Finishing moves range from super heroes tossing a player around violently to the Joker just kicking someone in the groin at the end. Sure there are more violent ones that involve neck snaps but it’s nothing worse then what you’d see in a PG-13 movie. Well Maybe a little more violent, but it’s pretty fun to play with teens and adults all in one room.
Special Edition
Don’t buy it. I like this Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe Collector’s Edition game but this special edition doesn’t even come with a proper 360 Green transparent case. In fact the cool box that houses the game doesn’t really hold the game. It’s more of a box. And inside the box is a DVD sized cardboard SLEEVE (like those AOL free trail ones) that you slide the game into. It’s loose in the box just shake it and you’ll hear your game smacking around. I really have to suggest the normal editon of this game… otherwise your game might go missing or take 5 minutes to free from the box of doom.
Final Thoughts
If you have kids, don’t worry because this game isn’t very graphic. Some of the girls dress skimpy but It’s treated like a Super Hero Summer flick. It’s a great game that is easy to pick up and can really be a great addition to your library especially if you have multiple kids or gamers in the house. If your looking for a good story, this one is decent. All and All it’s worth around 40-50 dollars.
Rating: - Best MK in ten years!
I haven’t been a fan of MK since after MK II for the Arcades and Super NES. I’ve tried all the sequels but they just weren’t for me, especially the last 4 for the PlayStation and PS2.
MK vs. DC brings this series back to it’s roots and it’s a lot of fun. The fatalities can be lame but they still do what they’re supposed to - give you closure to a hard fought victory.
The fighting engine is a little stiff but it doesn’t hinder the game play and you get used to it relatively quickly. Besides, I found it more enjoyable that Soul Calibur 4.
Bottom lins is that the game is fun. I received it today and played through the arcade mode with Scorpion and I can’t wait to play through it with the other 19 characters.
I hope Midway keeps this engine and fine tunes it for future MK releases. Here’s also hoping that the next one is a mature game too. I like the DC characters though and this is a nice one-off game.
Rating: - Not worth the extra price
It seems the more you read people talking about this game they either love it or hate it. I fall in the middle. I am just a casual gamer I play every now and then at night or on weekends, but I don’t spend every waking moment with a controller in my hands. So take that into consideration as I make this review.
If you are trying to chose between the kollector’s edition and the basic game save your money. The comic book that comes with the game is a quite small and almost just like a pamphlet and does not really add anything to the story. There is a small poster and a making of dvd. but you will probably be able to see all those videos on youtube before too long. And the game does not even come in a plastic case but just a cardboard sleeve.
Overall I think this a fun game. I have been playing Mortal Kombat games for a long time now and I find this one just as enjoyable. I think the mix of character is nice with some of your most popular MK characters with some of the most recognizable DC comics heroes and villains.
The gameplay has been tweaked a bit since the previous MK game, but it is nothing that you can’t adjust to, and overall I think it offers more character control. The special moves or super moves as called in the game are a fun mix too with most of your favorite moves form you MK characters kept in with a mix of a few new ones to keep things interesting.
We do have a return of the preprogrammed fatalities, but they have been toned down. No more dismemberment, decapitation, or removal of vital organs. This may be a big deal for you, but I don’t require a high level of gore to enjoy a video game.
As far as I can tell there are no hidden characters in the game, other then the unlockable boss characters. So don’t expect to find Reptile or the Martian Manhunter. But like most Xbox 360 games the game will support downloadable content in the future. But when new fighters show up is up to the video game publisher.
So a hardcore mortal kombat fan or gamer may not enjoy this game too much as it comes up short on gore and hidden characters. But the game still presents and interesting storyline and a chance to play as some of your favorite DC comics characters. I have it I enjoy playing it and hope to have fun with friends playing as superheros and undead ninjas.
