Rating: - banging from the back court
i love tennis, and have played it a long time. have played most of the recent video tennis games, from dreamcast virtua tennis, to todays VT3, and topspin 3. they both have there points. AS for smashcourt tennis, the thing i like the most about it, is that i can rally from the backcourt, and it may take several strikes to set up the point. i like the the mechanics there. in vt3, it at some point sends me lunging to make a point, and thus leading to end of the rally. Also in smashcourt i like the net play. actually it makes me look too good lol! i cannot comment on the add on features yet. i simply like the mechanical play of smashcourt 3. kevin

Rating: - Nice Graphics…poor gameplay
I love tennis video games, and I love the game of tennis. I’ve played or coached tennis for 29 years. I’ve seen some great tennis games come along, and generally I scoop them all up. I have Virtua Tennis for the 360 and had Smashcourt for the PS2, so when I saw there was a next gen Smashcourt for the XBox 360, I bought it sight unseen.

Oops.

Unfortunately SCT3 is a huge disappointment. I gave it a 2 star rating only because most people ignore the lowest ranking reviews as flames.

Positives: The graphics and the sound. It’s a well-modeled game, and the courts look like you could step through the TV and play. The inclusion of many top Pros is great. But that’s really it on positives.

Negatives:
* Very tiny print on screen. I have 20/20 eyesight and could barely read the text.

* Requires a lot of space to save. Unbelievable that a tennis game requires more save space than Oblivion.

* No real tennis tournaments; call me a purist or picky or whatever, but if I buy a tennis game, I want to play the hallowed courts of Wimbledon, and I want it to be called Wimbledon—not the British Championship. Sheesh, fork over the money for the license to use actual tournament names.

* But the worst problem of SCT3 is the gameplay. I could forgive all else if the game was relatively easy to play and “felt” like real tennis. The company claims that SCT3 is easy to play and very intuitive. Actually, not so much. There are WAY too many things that you have to do to pull off a powerful, well-placed stroke. Hold down trigger to race into position. Push the A button and hold, steer with control pad, then release the A button at just the right moment–way too much.

Hold and release to hit? Really? That is so counterintuitive. Maybe press the button once for backswing then press again to clobber the ball. Or maybe just press the button at the right moment. But press and hold and then release…it just feels wrong.

I’m out $40, and I’m sure the videogame store won’t let me return it. At least I’ve still got VirtuaTennis for the 360. {Sigh} Maybe next time I’ll rent first.
