To start off, I played the first Gears for the campaign/co-op campaign. And I purchased this game for the same reason, so if you’re looking to know more about multiplayer gameplay, check out another review. That said, this game plays very well, very much like a thrill ride for the most part. Story can use a lot more refining and better integration. This gets a 5-star in its own right. But Halo 3 and BioShock are still better games overall than GoW 2.

      GAMEPLAY: A+
This game still plays like the first Gears, except with a wider array of weapons and features (ie, chainsaw battles, different modes of executing a downed enemy). This is a third person shooter, for those who have not played the first one. And also, expect a lot of blood and violence, so if you are parents considering this game for your children, this serves as fair warning.

The campaign takes longer to beat this time around (10-20h I think). The graphics are very beautiful and realistic, and a lot more ‘vibrant’. The first Gears was in general a very dark and gloomy game. You see a lot more color in this one. Co-op campaign gameplay continues to be addictive and I think a strength in this game. It is still as immersive an experience for all players involved as the first Gears was.

Further, the creators definitely outdid themselves in design of the levels. You should expect to be pleasantly surprised with every single level that comes up. While you can clearly expect to see yourself running around in the streets battling waves after waves of Locust, you will also see another order of magnitude of fighting, with sometimes even as many as 80-100 Locust rushing through your field of view. To emphasize the creativity of the creators, there was also, at various points later in the game (spoiler warning), a section where you had to traverse a pitch-black tunnel to safely escort a vehicle across, and even a level where your squad somehow ends up inside one of the Locust beasts and had to fight your way out…

Overall, this game has been quite an experience. It deserves an A+ and Game of the Year awards.

      STORY: B+
Given that this game promised to have more leads on the storyline of the series than the first one, it does a better job. A lot of the early story is centered around Dom and him trying to find his wife, amidst all the fighting. The voice acting is compelling for the most part, and you can tell a lot more easily that it’s a dark time for humanity on this fictional planet. In the first Gears, playing through the story was mostly humorous because of the way all the guys were joking around in between fight scenes and the light talk that went on. In this Gears, there’s a lot more of a sense of urgency. And cutscenes are well made.

Finally, instead of COG tags for collection, we have bits and pieces of ‘collectibles’ like newspaper clippings, ads, so on and so forth that in some cases contribute to the backstory a little bit, kind of like the way those terminals worked in Halo 3. All of these, when found, are put in some scrapbook that’s accessible from the Main Menu, and arranged in a more or less logical order.

The reason the story only gets a B+: if you think about games like BioShock and Mass Effect and the Halo series with their very immersive storylines, GoW 2 is still not quite there. But it is closer to that state now than it was previously.

I won’t reveal any more in this part, but definitely expect a lot more of a plot that serves as a backdrop to all the fighting that’s going on. Epic Games did a good job of piquing your interest and making you want to learn more.

      CHARACTERS: A-
The characters come across a lot more human in this one. I have mentioned that the mood in this game comes across with a lot more of a sense of urgency to beat the Locust. That comes across well in all of the characters. As you play the game, you begin to feel more and more of a connection with each of the characters and in some cases, almost have to just stop playing when certain characters die… Let’s leave it at that.

      REPLAYABILITY: A
With the first game, I recall beating it my first time around with a friend on Hardcore, and then on Insane, and then going around and helping each of my roommates and a good number of friends beat the game on both difficulty settings. The same will probably hold for this game. I think it’s a thrilling enough of a ride that I wouldn’t mind going over it over and over and over…

To sum up, this game is definitely worth the $60.

PROS: This is all about gameplay and the feel of the game. Even on top of all the additional features and improvements, it is still undoubtedly Gears of War. The controls remain very intuitive and easy to learn. It’s easily one of the best 3rd person shooters out there, in my opinion.

CONS: I think storyline could have been a lot deeper. I guess they are saving this for Gears of War 3. Violence may be a little too much for the unprepared. Right now, this is all I can think of.

FINAL VERDICT: A. This is a very well-made game. I have the tendency to buy games and sell them back when I’m done. But I think GoW 2 will probably be a mainstay in my library, just as GoW was. For that, plus all the +’s I have mentioned, I think this game deserves an awesome grade. Can I hear Game of the Year?

Gears of War was THE game that made an XBox 360 worth owning, quickly becoming an action game classic that set new standards for the genre. Now we finally have Gears of War 2, a game that while not as jaw-dropping and awe-inspiring as the original, still manages to improve on many aspects of the original, while at the same time providing the same spectacular action elements that made the first game so good to begin with. The storyline gets expanded here with this sequel, as Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago prepare to make a last stand against the Locust as mankind’s days appear to be dwindling down. In terms of overal gameplay, not much as changed since the first game, but then again, not much had to either. There have been some minor refinements in terms of the game’s cover system, and the difficulty seems more forgiving this time around as well, although it doesn’t detract from the moments where the game can be quite challenging. Drop-in co-op support and XBox Live multiplayer modes are where the real meat of Gears of War 2 is to be found, and the assortment of new weapons, some brutal new attacks, gorgeously rendered environments, and some unforgettable enemies make this game a sequel that measures up to, and in some cases even surpasses, the original. It’s definitely one of the absolute best games you’ll play on the XBox 360, and it goes without saying that Gears of War 2 is an essential pick-up. Now here’s hoping that Cliffy B. and the rest of the crew at Epic Games keep up the great work in crafting what very well may become a legendary video game series.

      Wow.
Gears of War 2-Xbox 360 Game-
Graphics are incredible as you knew they would be if you experienced the first one. The sequel just looks better overall, sporting livelier colors and a little more variety in the levels. The first one was admittedly a bit murky and monochromed but this one does away with all that.

Sound is absolute mayhem, with a superb sound mix and a new music score by Steve Jablonsky of Transformers (the recent movie) fame. This is one loud game and you’ll be able to tell the difference once you fire that Lancer which now sounds like it packs some punch.

The story is a bit more refined, even if the voice acting kind of bites in a couple of instances. I wouldn’t necessarily blame the voice acting actually, just the way some of the lines were written, they just feel flat and forced. A lot of questions are put out there that are not necessarily answered and by the end, you’ll still have a bunch of questions that’ll demand some kind of answers. Still, Gears of War 2 has a much better story than the first one and is definitely more involving, especially in regards to the character of Dom who has a genuinely moving moment which I wouldn’t dare spoil. You also have some boss battles that are simply stunning in their execution with bosses so large you have to take them out from the inside (and yeah, I’m not telling you anymore than that). Have a friend join you to take on the Locust cooperatively and the game just gets that much better.

Multiplayer is a blast as expected and before I go into that, I have to mention the controls. They’ve refined them to a point that the game just plays much more fluidly than its predecessor and its immediately noticeable. Being that the controls have been fine tuned, it makes playing the single player and multiplayer portions an even more rewarding experience. I felt the first one had some moments where I couldn’t even take cover properly but thats been fixed. At any rate, there are some great multiplayer modes with an interesting take on capture the flag where the flag is a person you have to drag back to the scoring zone by force. And if you haven’t heard by now, there’s a new mode called Horde that lets you and four other friends (forgot to mention that the player capacity has been increased from eight players to ten in total in the versus modes) hold your own against fifty waves of Locust soldiers and beasts, coming at you faster and stronger with each successive wave of increasing numbers. Definitely my personal fave of the multiplayer modes.

What I love about this game is that it doesn’t dangle a carrot in front of you just to take it away at the last second. The first one was definitely guilty of this, showing creatures and events transpiring that you never really got to deal with or simply had to watch in a cutscene. Not here does this happen and let me tell you, I couldn’t believe some of the stuff that happened in this game in terms of the level design and what not. I would love to tell you more but I couldn’t for fear of ruining the overall experience. Let’s just say that you will not be disappointed or better yet, I don’t think you CAN be disappointed. This game delivers on all fronts and is one of the years best, period.

I was a big fan of the original Gears of War and, like any sequel, you wonder if it will be as good as the original or if you’re a pessimist, what they’ll screw up. The good news is that everything that was great in the original is even better in the sequel. Gears of War has longer play time than the original and the combat is more intense and fierce. Co-op mode through the campaign mode is extremely fun, especially using the most difficult game settings.

The maps are very detailed and graphically beautiful, the challenges of the game run from very easy to nearly impossible and their are several interesting scenarios throughout the campaign. I like that the creators of the game didn’t fall into the same predicable rut of having one boss character to beat in order to win the game, rather, there are several lesser bosses to beat throughout the game.

As with the original Gears of War, the most interesting aspect of the game is the online play with friends and others. There are several new online modes of play, my favorite being “horde” - where your team fights wave after wave of computer controlled opponents. Highly addictive and challenging.

If you were a fan of the original Gears of War, go out and pick up Gears of War 2 today!

      Corey Turner

Gears of War was received with a strong warm positive reception. Enough to make the game sell like hot cakes in 2006. With Gears of War 2 players will be finding a nice comfort zone between the original and enough new elements to make it a fully pledged sequel, and not just a simple rehash.
Gears of War two is a science fiction based third person shooter.

To begin with the game is more story driven, but still not enough to win any awards. Taking place ten months after we first took lead as Delta Squad leader SGT. Marcus Fenix, one can establish the locust have become relentless. You’ll soon me familiarized with the rather bleak apocalyptic wastelands of Sera, the first title brought as the setting. The locust are an underground dwelling menacing foe, who have brought destruction to cataclysmic proportions, in a war where death knows no boundaries. As Marcus you’ll encounter a variety of new enemies along with new allies, in an attempt to bring an end to over a decade of war.

New weapons, better AI, and a stronger lengthier campaign make replay value certain for offline goers. With the addition of bots for multiplayer, maybe even online vets will fine a reason to stray from online (or to confirm their seasoned ’skills’…). Online seems to be a bit rough right now, with players adjusting to some changes (shotgun has reduced range, chainsaw counters, and voting for what to play), but nothing a patch can’t fix. The online though is still fierce, and still a blast to hack away at. Multiplayer also now gives way to 5vs5 matches, an additional player on each team, new tactics anyone?

Speaking of tactics, the all new horde mode is one that will require the uttermost attention. Five players can embark on a fight for survival, against wave after wave after wave after wave of locust. To do so, plot communicate and lastly have fun! Waves do have cycles after a while, but definitely a worthwhile addition. Seeking to lead in commands or not, their is a spot readily open to anyone willing to bring down a gore fest. Maybe you’ll enjoy the new variety of heavy boomer like enemy ready to tear your face off!

Additional downloadable content (DLC), is already at the battle front. Five additional multiplayer maps are available free of charge with a redeemable code given inside (xbox live silver or gold is required). These maps are classic but altered restorations players have been having fire fights on for nearly two years. Famed ‘Gridlock’ makes an appearance, but in an aged ‘nature has taken root’ again look. ‘Canals’ has got a case of frostbite, and is available in every new copy of the game. While you may not of been an early bird, the limited edition featured gold plated weaponry. This will not change performance nor hinder it, this is merely for aesthetic value.

Some of the new weapons are a fire spewing flame thrower, some new grenades ( in addition to smoke grenades having become more critical), and heavy weaponry. Heavy weapons can be carried in excess to already having your four weapon slot full. They slow you down, but are powerful. These include, mortars, and turrets.Turrets were originally a mounted only weapon (still available in some instances), but now can be carried…,but need constant cooling with the right button (rb, shoulder button). Mortars add a nice touch to long range battles, when one runs out of sniper ammo. That will really stir them up. The lancer still provides us with the perfect blend of range, ammo capacity, and awesome gruesome chainsaw action. Chainsaw ‘duals’ are now added to spice up fights.

Boss battles aren’t the most engaging, but get climactic. A variety of them will come your way, that a handful of acts to seclude them in. Five acts comprised of six or so chapters each give the option to insert yourself into favorable battles. The boss battles work in repetition, one you figure the plan of attack it’s a cake walk. Having beat the game on two difficulties, it doesn’t hold as too hard or too easy. Finding the sweet spot is crucial to avoid frustration. Achievements can be unlocked for lower difficulty completion upon beating the game on higher modes.

Overall the physics, graphics, and sound are stellar. The game features a more colorful environment, but still rather gray and blue. Certain objects can now be destroyed, but nothing to really change the gameplay. Controls are excellent, some may find vehicular based movement to be a little redundant. Players can still grapple behind cover and sprint, along with a new ability to take locust as a means of shielding.

What can I say, Gears two delivers. If you were looking into this title with high hopes, it has not let you down. When looking at the large catalog of games for this holiday season, rush to grab this title. One of the few worth the full price purchase. A title that has squeezed out every last drop of greatness, and turned it into a near flawless atmospheric shooter.

Just for perspective, I am a 40 year old who only has time to play at night when my kids go to bed.

I am about 3 hours into the Gears of War 2-Xbox 360 Game and I have to say, I can’t remember the last time I have had such a great time with a game! Gears 1 was a great game, but rough around the edges. Gears 2 is just about as perfect as I can imagine! They story, graphics, moves, weapons, monsters, AI, collectibles, levels, etc, have ALL been improved.

I don’t want to say anything specific about the levels or story because I really think you should experience it first hand.

If you like shooters, you will LOVE this Gears of War 2-Xbox 360 Game. I would say this 3rd person styple works better on consoles than FPS, and Gears 2 is by far, the best I have played!

    7. December 3, 2008 01:11 am
      Amazing

I loved the first Gears Of War and the sequel is even better. The new game modes are excellent and the new weapons are great. Horde mode is a lot of fun. Sure, the shotgun is harder to use but once you get used to it its not bad at all. Single player is great as well. Highly recommended.

Like most Jerry Bruckheimer movies, Gears of War 2 takes what was good from previous efforts and mixes them all together. It also builds upon an already firm foundation of great gun play, cut scenes, and graphics. The criticism I have for Gears 2 is that not much in the game is all that original. I don’t want to spoil things for those who haven’t played it yet, but suffice it to say most of what’s in Gears 2 has been done before (ala Jerry Bruckheimer).

Don’t get me wrong. Gears 2 is stunning from beginning to end. The graphics continue to be the best I’ve seen on a console, bar none. Sound design and camera work are great. The array of weapons is improved with the good stuff left alone. You get to ride more “vehicles” than in the previous game. The story is intriguing, and it fleshes out more details about each character (especially Dom). It’s an all around treat.

Unfortunately, a lot of the levels have been done before in games like Halo 3, Resistance: Fall of Man, and other countless shooters. Is it that developers are running out of ideas or is it that there just aren’t that many arenas to put a shooter in? I don’t know, but if it weren’t for the great story telling and game mechanics, Gears 2 could have been a big dud.

Luckily for us, Gears 2 is awesome. I finished the single player campaign in about 4 days and loved every minute of it. The story, characters, graphics, and gun play are top notch (albeit not totally original).

      Gadget Guy

If you’re a fan of the first one, you’ll like this Gears of War 2-Xbox 360 Game. As some of the reviewers have already said, it’s not much different except for a few minor tweaks–so don’t expect anything new, really. With that said, everything that was great about the Gears of War 2-Xbox 360 Game is still here. The setting is more colorful, which I actually liked. The bosses are bigger and the story is more in depth. I just liked blasting the Locusts so it didn’t really matter to me.

I bought an Xbox 360 because of the original Gears of War. After I sold my console and hearing that part 2 was coming out, I bought the Xbox 360 again, and boy, I don’t regret it at all! The gameplay is addictive, and there are no more krylls, which I hated in the first game. It’s much easier than the first one though (even though the first one wasn’t that difficult). I haven’t tried the online play since I don’t subscribe to Xbox Live.

It immersed me from the start. The controls are easy to pick up. If you’re familiar with the controls, you can skip it. Otherwise, you’ll be training a rookie name Carmine. It’s very brief. The game is short like the first one, but that’s how games are nowadays. They cram so much content on a single disc. Overall, I recommend this game if you like the first one.
