Call of Duty: World at War is a first-person shooter taking place in the WWII setting once more. I’ve written many long game reviews in the past few weeks, many great games are sprouting their heads. Long awaited and overall great titles have not only sprinkled the holiday season, but draped it. With power house titles left and right, one must really conserve and pick the best. So I’ll keep the details simple, and hopefully you can decide by this.
Fan of “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare”? If so you’ll be in for a warm welcome, this game uses the same interface and multiplayer setup. Expect a pretty good frame rate, and a devastatingly hard campaign mode (for players on the ‘Veteran’ setting that is). In this title you’ll fight as both the Americans and the Russians. Take on admirable Japanese soldiers, or destructive German Nazi troops.
Campaign features two fronts, and a few interesting non-typical levels (a rail based flying level, and a tank powerhouse level). From islands soaked in sun, to rainy city streets you’ll be fighting in a all out war. Additional features included are the ability to use bayonets on rifles, and the all new powerful scorching flame thrower. Bayonets play out basically the same as your standard melee (knife), and the flame thrower can burn up terrain with a decent range. You’ll become acquainted with the staple World War 2 guns once more (M1 Garand, Thompson, PPSH, MP40, Nimbu, Type 100, MG42, BAR, Browning).
Online seekers will find some perks added and some changes in names. Rest assure it’s still the same frantic multiplayer combat, but with some more open ended maps. For players not familiar with ‘perks’, these are implementations to ones character that give additional abilities (and are allowed up to three, ranging in different classes). Dropping grenades upon death, carrying two primary weapons, and having more health, just to name a few. One can pit themselves against a myriad of players and game types to achieve higher ranking, and more weaponry at their disposal. Maps are based off the campaign, and are pretty open ended, but maybe a bit too confusing at times. Tanks have now returned, similar to CoD 3’s tank, except it is a little bit harder to defeat. If you’ve maxed out your rank and feel their is nothing left to do, enter ‘Prestige Mode’. Removing all weapons gained along with perks, and beginning a new with a higher rank symbol. Challenges will be depleted too. Multiplayer has now added dogs in place of helicopters at the seven kill mark. Players can obtain special help after benching the three, five, and seven kill mark without dying. One may find the rigors of battling pros to be frustrating, hop into ‘Boot Camp’ to readily play other beginners. Keep in mind vet players, some perks (cough Juggernaut cough) are just as annoying as ever.
Also available to the multiplayer experience is co-op campaign, and the addicting zombie mode. Co-op campaign is great fun, but be warned achievement junkies, some achieves are nullified in this mode. Zombie mode brings you into less a horror and more a adrenaline rushing doomsday. Up to four players can join and unite themselves in defeating zombies in a worn down base. A currency is used to buy weaponry, and enable usage of other locations in the base. More opened up areas though more zombie accessibility. These staggering zombified Nazis strike in waves. Making things even more difficult and tense is their ability to break in to your base! After each wave players can book it to the nearest entrance/window and board them up for currency and brief security. Once all players have died the game ends and tallies up scores, players can revive fallen team mates though before calling it quits. To say the least, this is one of the funnest options any Call of Duty or game has ever included. It’s also one of the reasons you have to complete the campaign, as it’s only available after completion (oh boy!).
So really World at War doesn’t break any new territory like the previous title had done. Yet it glazes the plateau over with a few new features, and another reason to continue playing multiplayer day after day. You may of noticed a longer description dedicated to multiplayer segments. Essentially this game plays out well in solo go a bouts, but is destined to remain a multiplayer investment. If you are a single player person, hopefully a rental will suffice. In the mean time, thousands of players have made the move to this games online and are definitely enjoying it. So maybe it didn’t go above the call of duty again, but it sure is a fun worthy purchase.
EDIT: I just wanted to add that there are actually four perks available in multiplayer. The additional perk not available in Cod4 is a vehicular perk slot. Also now having logged in a hefty figure of hours, multiplayer overall still seems to be standing as enjoyable. Some glitches have been located, and people are exploiting them. Mainly a glitch that enables a player the ability to get underneath certain maps.
A lot of people are saying this is strikingly similar to COD4: Modern Warfare, and it is. That’s what’s good about it. COD4 was one of the best games. There were so many battles of WW2 that they need to keep making games like this. All in all, this is a very fun game, of course the single player is a little easy, but still fun. The multiplayer online and even coop are amazing features. Really, I’d suggest this to someone who got burnt out on COD4 but still wanna have just as much fun playing it with a new feel
Last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare delivered an awesome and varied single-player experience that was matched with an even better multiplayer suite, and it made for some really big shoes for Call of Duty: World at War to fill. There’s a solid single-player campaign, co-op play, a huge multiplayer suite, and even a fun, silly mode featuring zombies. Instead of serving up Normandy and D-Day for what would have been the umpteenth time for World War II shooters, the game covers the island hopping campaign in the Pacific as well as the Red Army’s reversal of the tide at Stalingrad all the way to the Fall of Berlin. This provides some interesting new battlefields set on sun-bleached coral atolls in the Pacific.
There are plenty of deafening, large-scale set-piece battles, but there’s also variation to change things up but remains a Call of Duty game through and through. What that means is that the action is fast and fluid, as well as rigidly scripted. The success of the franchise proves that there’s a vast audience for that, and this won’t change anyone’s mind.
The campaign does suffer a bit due to its broad scope; the narrative skips over months at a time, showcasing the major battles of the war. The result is that the sense of story doesn’t seem as strong as it did in Modern Warfare. Modern Warfare had the advantage of a fictionalized story with plenty of shocking twists and turns.
All told, the single-player campaign is about as short as that in Modern Warfare, but it doesn’t drag on. Plus, there’s considerably more replayability here because the bulk of the campaign is playable in cooperative mode with up to three other players. Multiplayer is definitely an area where World at War shines. Modern Warfare had arguably one of the greatest multiplayer suites in recent history, and World at War builds on it. There remains the create-a-class and rank system that lets you unlock perks, weapons, and upgrades that you can then mix-and-match to create different load outs.
It’s easy to be jaded about World War II shooters, but Treyarch makes a convincing argument to stay excited with World at War. The game is packed with a deep amount of gameplay to appeal to every type of player, from those who want to experience a gritty single-player campaign to those who like to play with their friends to those who just like to play multiplayer. This is a solid, confident shooter with plenty to offer the casual and hardcore alike.
When I heard of this I was scratching my head of confusion on why would they go back to world war 2 but it turns out this game is one of the most greatest world war 2 game I have ever played. I have to admit this game is way better than BIA Hells highway in every way and it as every bit as good as Call of Duty 4.
When I downloaded the beta version on live, I didn’t expect much due to the insanity that was CoD4. But this game delivered. The graphics are noticeably sharper, with more interactions with the map. Also, the colors are darker, but the setting is not the middle east so it can be expected. As a WWII set game, I didn’t have high expectations but the maps were great, the weapons were challenging and different, and the overall experience was more in depth. Unlocking practically everything on live makes the game, I won’t say serious, but more involved. Headshots are a pain to get off now, but the overall experience of a good WWII game makes up for it.
I have been a huge fan of Call of Duty since Call of Duty 2 came out. There were some questions about whether this would be a good game and those doubts were put to rest on November 11. This game is great. It is similar to COD 4 in the way the screen layouts are and the leveling up on the multiplayer. They’ve added more/different perks, different guns (it is WWII after all and not modern warfare), and there are 65 levels to go through in order to prestige instead of 55. The campaign is also just as great. It is difficult playing it on veteran so be prepared. Also, the online playing is a little more difficult because everything is gritter so it’s harder to spot the enemy. Also, if you have a poor/slow internet connection, your bullets may not register and so people with a better internet connection will be able to kill you a great deal easier and faster.
I highly recommend this game to anyone who has played any of the COD games and to anyone who enjoys 1st person shooters.
This Call of Duty: World At War xbox 360 game is great. Everyone is comparing this to COD4, why? They are both two different games, set in two different time periods, and made by two different developers. I don’t think that COD5 was trying to be like COD4. I’m not saying COD4 is not great, it is, better than this, but everyone need to stop comparing the two so much. I played COD4…and WOW, great, COD5…great also and I think COD5 is the best WWII game EVER. Graphics, gameplay, features, fun…great. The unlockable Zombie mode is great fun, the destructible environment, flame-throwers, flame-tanks, GREAT.
So overall, this games is great…9.5/10.
This Call of Duty: World At War game has every element that made Call of Duty 4 great, and more! More perks, online co-op campaign, vehicles, and DOGS! The multiplayer is just as addicting, if not more, than Call of Duty 4, and that’s not your thing, then you can always beat the game with your friends via Xbox Live! I love it, and if you don’t like WWII weapons, then you shouldn’t have bought the game, however, these weapons are still awesome. Overall, I think World at War will be a game of the year contender.
Welcome to World War 2. No, you will not be experiencing D-Day for the hundreth time, nor will you be tackling German after German (Atleast, Not ALL the Time anyways). This time, your going to be experiencing WW2 from the Pacific Front, with the Japanese. Like the back of the game says, This truly was a War I have never experienced before. But Dont be fooled, this isn’t the Call of Duty we knew before COD 4. This is a much grittier, and much more traumatic (and Dramatic) experience.
This was the first COD game that actually felt like an M rated title to me. This War wasn’t truly about fighting for Valor, Heroics, or other Stereotypical means. This was a battle to survive…
The game opens with a very well executed (No pun intended) Torture Scene.
You then set foot out onto the beach and boy is it pretty. The Water recieved a massive update. The moonlight cascades off of the nearby reef so well. The fire has also recieve some tune-ups, nothing major, but an improvement nonetheless.
There is actually 2 stories in World At War:
The story of the American Marine Pvt. Miller in the Pacific Front, and the story of Pvt. Demitri Palinski of the Soviet Union, as they desperately push to Berlin towards the end of the war. Both offer a very Nice contrast from each other, so no setting gets Too Stale.
The AI is top-notch. The Japanese will perform Bonzai Rushes, Ambushes, and Do Anything to try and kill you. The Enemys are so ruthless, that they never make you regret setting them ablaze with A Molotov Cocktail or Splattering there face on the sidewalk while they lying defenseless at your feet.
Theres some new weapons this time around. Whether it be a Double Barrel Shotgun, or a Flamethrower, they all look, work, and sound very nice. They also added Limb Dismemberment. Shoot a man at close range with a high-caliber rifle, and his arm will soar through the air like a bald eagle as he falls to the ground in pain.
As fun as the game is, there is a few flaws. None of the are Game-Breaking, but they certainly do Hinder the experience. Well as it turns out, if your hiding behind cover that a friendly NPC wants, you can become stuck (and immobile) inside of him. This has only happened once, whether it be a freak incident or not, It really made it seem Un-polished.
Some Frame-rate choppieness occurs here and there, but thats a minor gripe. The Single Player is also pretty short, but that means you can jump straight into the online sooner. But there is one last gripe. The AI is good, but it has the tendency to lock onto only one person. Not gamebreaking, but it can shatter the realism quite to a degree.
Online is as good as ever, with the addition of a Zombie-Nazi Kill-a-thon and 4 Player Co-op Single Player.
So in conclusion, buy World at War. It uses the COD 4 engine, but it also expands on it. Like I stated before, Take a trip through the trees.. Just watch out for the ambush.
I have always been a fan of pretty much anything WWII and this game grabbed me from the start. When I 1st stuck in Call of Duty World at War I was totally blown away by the single player campaign. I found the graphics were awesome and the sound was even better. I felt the music though repeating a lot was well done and it really added to the action when the music got more aggressive during big action sequences. I was totally blown away in the 1st level that takes place at night when all of a sudden there is a flare shot up in the air and a surprise awaits you even though these surprises are not often it was nice. One thing I did notice that the hiding attackers or when someone rushes you it feels kind of overdone so you come to expect it but it was satisfying to rush them. I guess maybe the Japanese attackers were really this aggressive in WWII but even with that said it feels overdone. I also found myself getting blown up by so many grenades and dying that it became very annoying. Something else that annoyed me was enemies coming up behind me or out of my field of vision and giving me a quick death. It kept me on my toes and on edge but even that felt annoying. I did find the AI to rather weak to the point where I killed a room full of people with a knife and one time I ran through a mission with just a flamethrower. The game lacks depth when it comes to story or character development and it would of been nice to actually feel for the characters like BIA Hells Highway. I guess by the amount of content out there a lot of knowledge of WWII exists so people know what WWII was about and Call of Duty games are usually just straight forward war games. I wouldn’t say this is as good as when I 1st played Call of Duty 1 or two a few years ago but it still does WWII games justice in my mind.
I really did enjoy this game all the way through its just the second time I went through I began to notice the problems with it. I try to enjoy WWII games b/c one day I believe there will be no more made since the genre is overused so I enjoy them while I can. I really enjoyed Call of Duty 4 and I think I enjoyed this one even more since I guess I like WWII over modern combat. I found the blood effects to add to the gameplay but I am not saying it satisfied me to blow someones brains out or stab someone charging me ,but the overall depth feels better with these extras. I guess my biggest problem is this game doesn’t do anything that hasn’t already been done.
The problems I ran into like going through the entire campaign in one sitting that took me about six or seven hours b/c I couldn’t bring myself to put it down. This was not a good thing since most games I like always have a strong single player experience. Then again WWII games are kind of hard to keep you coming back to single player since you can’t really add to the experience you already had. I didn’t buy the game for this reason so I rented it. I think this game is a five star rental in a heartbeat but sinking 50 or 60 bucks in another game it just really isn’t worth it. If you are more into multiplayer than have at it and buy it but for me its just a rental.
Multiplayer on the other hand was fun while I had the game at least at 1st. I ran through the entire game before trying multiplayer so I already unlocked zombie mode and plus I already had a hang of the controls. I absolutely didn’t like deathmatch which I am sure its for some people I just couldn’t get into it. For some reason it reminded me more of Counter Strike since its more about who has the quicker trigger finger. Odds are if you get on there with a veteran you will get owned though. Even though I loved Counter Strike I didn’t care for this as much. I enjoyed zombie mode most of all for some reason. I liked the idea of being stuck in a house with 3 other people fending off nazi zombies. I grew tired after a while of even this since the gameplay is basically repetitive and if you play with the wrong people you will have it even harder. Co-Op was probably my favorite part be it competitive or campaign co-op. Going along side someone and saving them about time they are gonna get stabbed in the back was a nice feeling. This also goes along with playing with the right people b/c some will try to speed through and usually die. I enjoy games even more when they put co-op campaigns in the mix of multiplayer either online or off. By the time I took the game back I was kind of tired of it but it was fun believe me it just wasn’t for me. I couldn’t really justify a sixty dollar purchase of the game just for this. I know some people will get a absolute kick out of the multiplayer but it just couldn’t keep me. Even though the co-op was nice I guess the variety wasn’t really there for me since all the multiplayer modes have already been done and I felt like I had played it before. If you are an absolute multiplayer person with a passion for it I would probably say buy it but if you are picky about what you buy like me than its probably more of a rental. I only own about three or four games all together and usually a game I buy is five star for me after a rental but anything I don’t buy is usually less. Though there are plenty of people who love this game it just wasn’t for me.
